About the Red Rock Racers
Who are the Red Rock Racers?
We are a group of motorsport enthusiasts dedicated to providing well-organized, affordable and safe autocross and time trial events in Western Colorado. The Red Rock Racers are a non-profit club that's been operating since 2006. Any leftover funds at the end of an event will go back into the club to buy equipment and improve future events. Sometimes we're lazy and call ourselves R3. Our focus is on simply providing excellent racing opportunities.
What is an autocross?
Autocrossing is a low-speed competitive driving event. A course is set up in a parking lot with cones and cars are timed through the course. Most cars will be able to complete the entire course in second gear. The low speeds of the event mean that it's safe and non-destructive, but don't think that it's boring! Autocrossing is an excellent way to develop car control skills and get some competition experience at low cost. You can see some pictures and video on our gallery page.
What is a track day?
At a track day, we run at the Grand Junction Motor Speedway. Speeds are higher, but peak at around 70 mph depending on the car and driver. Because the track is only a mile long, we send the cars out at 15 second intervals and only allow 4-5 on the track at any time. There's no passing so it's very safe - but it's challenging and a real blast.
What safety equipment do I need?
You will need a motorcycle or car helmet. If you don't have one, you may be able to borrow one from another competitor but they are not optional. Otherwise, you simply need a car in good working order. This means no loose wheel bearings, no dripping fluids and properly mounted seatbelts or harnesses. If your car is not safe, you won't be able to run. There will be a quick tech inspection at registration. Roll bars are not required and the driver must have closed-toe shoes.
What does it cost?
The cost of events will vary depending on the cost to rent the facilities and insure them. Track days are $75 for 2009. Spectators get in free.
What about the weather?
All events take place rain or shine. However, snow or ice may cause a cancellation. We will give as much warning as possible in this event, and we don't anticipate it being a problem until late in the year.
Where do you do this?
For 2009, all our events are scheduled to take place at the Grand Junction Motor Speedway - aka "the kart track". It's a good size, allowing us to run fast but safe.
Can I come out to watch?
Sure! Spectators are welcome. You can even go for a ride in one of the cars if you'd like, but you have to wear a helmet. It's probably a good idea to ask the driver for permission as well.
How are cars classified?:
We are currently developing some new classification.
Will you have drifting/track days/rallycross/hot air balloon rides?
At this time, we don't have any plans to run events other than autocross or track days. Sound level restrictions prevent us from drifting at the track. If this changes we'll send out notice to our mailing list. Unfortunately we cannot run events on dirt according to our insurance, so rallycross is out. That's a shame, it would solve all of our facility problems!
Your website sucks.
That's not really a question. But it's kinda true. Our website isn't pretty, or fancy, or even all that easy to navigate or maintain. We're working on it.
